Dengue death toll in Bangladesh exceeds 400 amid rising infections
Bangladesh’s dengue outbreak has claimed more than 400 lives since the beginning of 2025, according to updated data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
DGHS reported that, as of Wednesday morning, the total number of dengue fatalities reached 401, while the cumulative number of infections since January rose to 98,705. In the last 24 hours alone, three additional deaths and 421 new cases were recorded across the country.
Health authorities noted that 19 deaths occurred in December, 104 in November, and 80 in October, reflecting a sustained rise in severe cases over recent months. December has so far seen 4,308 infections, compared to 24,535 cases in November.
Medical experts warn that the widespread presence of Aedes mosquitoes continues to accelerate transmission. Officials announced intensified vector-control measures, including expanded larval-control operations and monitoring of mosquito-breeding sites in urban areas.
Local media, including Xinhua and IANS, also reported a sharp uptick in admissions across Dhaka and multiple regional divisions.
Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes and typically presents with high fever, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, vomiting and rash. Health authorities reiterate that early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention significantly reduce mortality, especially in severe cases.(ILKHA)
