Dr. Abu Safiya held in isolation under harsh conditions in Israeli jail
Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is being held in Israeli solitary confinement under "harsh conditions" and stripped of regular medical care, a Palestinian lawyer revealed on Sunday.
Lawyer Nasser Odeh expressed deep concern for the doctor's deteriorating health, noting that Abu Safiya suffers from several chronic illnesses.
"He needs to obtain medicines and medical treatment on a regular basis, which he has been deprived of recently," Odeh said, emphasizing that the Israeli prison administration is intentionally withholding essential medications.
Dr. Abu Safiya was abducted by occupation forces in late 2024 during a violent military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital—one of the last functioning medical facilities in northern Gaza at the time. The raid was part of Israel's broader, devastating military campaign in the enclave.
Odeh, who managed to visit the detained doctor on May 26, stated that Abu Safiya was abruptly transferred on June 3 to solitary confinement in the notorious Nafha Prison, located in the southern Naqab desert.
The lawyer described a highly restrictive and intimidating environment during their brief meeting, which took place through a glass barrier via phone in a camera-monitored room.
"Abu Safiya was handcuffed and shackled," Odeh said, adding that Israeli guards stood directly alongside both him and the doctor. "The visit was very short, making it difficult for the detainee to discuss his personal matters due to fear of reprisal or punishment from the guards present."
"We don’t have any communication or updates regarding his condition," Odeh warned, pointing to the complete isolation enforced by prison authorities.
Dr. Abu Safiya's targeting highlights a systematic pattern of Israeli forces arresting, assaulting, and detaining Palestinian healthcare workers since the war began in October 2023. Palestinian health officials have repeatedly condemned these abductions as part of a deliberate campaign to dismantle Gaza's medical infrastructure.
According to Palestinian figures, Israel's military campaign has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and injured over 173,000 others, the vast majority of whom are women and children.
Despite a ceasefire agreement that officially took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli forces have continued near-daily attacks across the blockaded territory. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that at least 961 Palestinians have been killed and over 3,000 injured since the truce was signed, underscoring the ongoing violence faced by the population. (ILKHA)
