Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has said he will not accept any government position other than defense minister, days after his dismissal sparked public demonstrations and renewed political tensions in Ukraine.

Fedorov made the remarks on Wednesday following a series of meetings with President Volodymyr Zelensky, who removed him from the post on July 14 in a decision that prompted nationwide protests by supporters calling for his reinstatement.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky confirmed that he had offered Fedorov several alternative roles within the government, including the position of deputy prime minister for military innovation, as part of efforts to keep the former minister involved in Ukraine's wartime administration.

Fedorov thanked the president for the proposals but said he could only serve in the role of defense minister.

"I'm grateful to the president for all the options offered. However, today there are only three positions in the country that, alongside the troops on the battlefield, actually shape the course of the war: the president, the defense minister, and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Fedorov said.

He added, "That is why I will not accept any position other than defense minister."

Fedorov's comments come amid ongoing debate over the government's leadership during the war with Russia. His removal earlier this month drew criticism from opposition figures and sections of the public, who argued that changing senior defense leadership during an active conflict could affect military planning and public confidence.

The Ukrainian government has not provided detailed reasons for Fedorov's dismissal, although officials have maintained that changes in senior positions are part of broader efforts to strengthen the country's wartime administration.

Political observers say Fedorov's decision to reject alternative appointments underscores the growing tensions surrounding Ukraine's military leadership and could complicate efforts by Zelensky's administration to reorganize the government while maintaining unity during the conflict.

For now, the presidency has not indicated whether further discussions with Fedorov will take place or whether another candidate will be appointed permanently to lead the Defense Ministry. (ILKHA)
