France expands school phone restrictions to include high school students
France is set to expand its ban on mobile phones in schools to include high schools from the upcoming academic year, as part of efforts to combat digital addiction among students.
The measure builds on a policy introduced in 2018 that prohibited mobile phone use in primary and middle schools across the country.
Under the expanded rules announced by the French Ministry of Education, high school students will also be required to limit the use of mobile devices during school hours.
French authorities said the move is intended to help students focus on their studies, strengthen social interaction and reduce dependence on digital devices in educational settings.
Since 2018, students in primary and middle schools have been required to keep their phones switched off or stored in their bags throughout the school day.
The government now plans to extend the "phone-free school" model to the high school level, creating a more comprehensive framework for reducing smartphone use in classrooms and school environments.
French Education Minister said the ban is expected to take effect in September, at the start of the new academic year.
The legal framework for the measure is expected to be finalized during the summer months, with new restrictions set to apply to smartphone and other smart-device use within school premises.
"Broader digital safety measures under consideration"
France's efforts are not limited to mobile phone use in schools.
The government is also examining additional measures related to social media use and online safety as part of a broader strategy aimed at protecting young people from the negative effects of excessive screen time and digital dependency.
The latest move reflects growing concern among policymakers in several countries over the impact of smartphones and social media on students' learning, well-being and mental health. (ILKHA)
