Gunmen raid school in northeast Nigeria, abduct students during national exams
Gunmen stormed a secondary school in Nigeria's northeastern Borno State on Monday, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students while they were sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) biology examination, police said.
The attack took place at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, located in Askira/Uba Local Government Area, when armed assailants entered the school during the examination.
Borno State Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the attack, saying the gunmen infiltrated the area on motorcycles during the town's weekly market before launching the assault. He said one teacher was killed and several students were abducted.
Security forces responded to the attack, preventing more students from being taken and launching a search-and-rescue operation to locate the abducted victims, Daso said.
In a later update, the Nigerian military said troops from Operation HADIN KAI rescued 10 abducted students and teachers during a follow-up operation. Efforts to locate the remaining victims and apprehend the attackers are continuing, according to military authorities.(ILKHA)
