A high-level Hamas delegation led by political bureau chief Khalil al-Hayya met Sunday with Egyptian intelligence director Hasan Rashad at the agency’s headquarters in Cairo, marking the beginning of an official visit by the Palestinian group to Egypt.

During the meeting, the Hamas delegation briefed the Egyptian intelligence chief on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, with particular emphasis on Israeli military actions and settler violence against Palestinians.

Al-Hayya also discussed what Hamas described as Israel’s failure to uphold the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement and commitments linked to US President Donald Trump’s plan.

According to Hamas, Israel’s refusal to accept the recently proposed roadmap is undermining efforts to consolidate existing understandings and prevent further escalation in the region.

The delegation provided Egyptian officials with an assessment of conditions across the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the situation of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Hamas warned that what it described as Israel’s “destructive policies” require urgent intervention from regional and international actors to prevent further deterioration.

The discussions in Cairo come as Egypt continues to play a key role in diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the Gaza conflict and maintaining channels of communication between the parties.

Several senior Hamas officials accompanied al-Hayya during the meetings in Cairo.

The delegation included Mohamed Darwish, Khaled Mishaal, Zaher Jabbarin, Basem Naim and Ghazi Hamad.

The Hamas delegation’s visit is expected to focus on developments in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and efforts to strengthen existing understandings while preventing a further escalation of hostilities.

Egypt has long served as a key mediator in negotiations involving Hamas and Israel and has maintained communication with Palestinian and regional parties amid continuing efforts to address the conflict. (ILKHA)
