Hamas says Cairo dialogue marks significant step toward Palestinian unity
Palestinian national factions meeting in the Egyptian capital have made significant strides toward forging a unified political position aimed at safeguarding Palestinian rights and confronting ongoing Israeli aggression, according to senior Hamas official Hossam Badran.
Badran, a member of Hamas's Political Bureau and its negotiation delegation, said on Thursday that the meetings taking place in Cairo are being conducted in a "positive and constructive atmosphere," reflecting a shared determination among Palestinian forces to strengthen national unity at a critical juncture for the Palestinian cause.
He noted that there is broad consensus among the participating factions regarding a common roadmap for implementing the second phase of the proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump, with discussions focused on ensuring that any political process serves the interests and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
"The Palestinian factions continue intensive consultations aimed at formulating a unified national position that responds to the current political developments and protects our people's legitimate rights," Badran said.
He added that Hamas is simultaneously engaging with regional mediators in a responsible and positive manner to help ensure the success of the ongoing negotiations, stressing that the movement's efforts are guided by the need to protect Palestinians from continued suffering and to thwart Israeli schemes targeting their land and national future.
According to Badran, the talks have already produced meaningful progress that can serve as a foundation for further achievements in the coming period. He emphasized that the understandings reached must be translated into practical steps capable of advancing the Palestinian cause and reinforcing internal Palestinian cohesion.
The Hamas leader also renewed calls on the international community and mediating parties to exert serious pressure on Israel to end its violations and military attacks against the people of Gaza. He stressed that Israel must be compelled to honour its commitments and obligations under previously agreed arrangements instead of continuing policies that deepen the humanitarian catastrophe facing Palestinians.
The Cairo discussions come as Palestinians seek to consolidate their ranks amid relentless Israeli military operations and growing regional tensions. Observers view the emerging spirit of consensus among Palestinian factions as a vital step toward strengthening the national front, defending Palestinian rights, and advancing the longstanding struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.
For many Palestinians, the pursuit of national unity remains an essential pillar in confronting occupation, resisting attempts to marginalize their legitimate aspirations, and preserving the resilience of a people who continue to endure immense hardships while steadfastly holding on to their homeland and their right to justice.
