Hostage crisis continues after bank robbery in western German
German police are responding to an ongoing hostage crisis at a Volksbank branch in the town center of Sinzig, Rhineland-Palatinate, after an apparent armed robbery attempt involving a cash transport vehicle escalated on Friday morning.
Several people, including the driver of an armored cash-in-transit vehicle, are being held inside the bank by multiple suspects, authorities confirmed. Police described the situation as “stable” but said they are assuming several perpetrators and hostages are present within the building, with at least some believed to be barricaded in the vault area.
The incident began around 9:00 a.m. local time (7:00 a.m. GMT) when a cash transport vehicle arrived at the bank on the town’s Marktplatz. According to reports, one or more suspects intercepted and threatened a bank employee or the cash transport driver outside the branch at gunpoint, forcing them inside. The standoff quickly developed into a hostage situation.
Police in Koblenz launched a large-scale operation, deploying heavily armed officers, special forces, and helicopters. A wide area of the town center has been cordoned off, though authorities emphasized there is currently no danger to residents or people outside the secured perimeter.
As of the latest updates, negotiations or further tactical developments have not been publicly detailed. It remains unclear how many suspects are involved, the exact number of hostages, or what weapons the perpetrators may have. No injuries have been reported so far.
Sinzig, a town of around 17,000 inhabitants located west of the Rhine River roughly midway between Bonn and Koblenz, is experiencing significant disruption in its central district as the operation continues.
This is a developing story. Police have not released further details on demands from the suspects or a possible timeline for resolution. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and follow official updates. (ILKHA)
