Ukraine signs deal for 16 Swedish Gripen E fighter jets, Zelensky says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that Ukraine has signed an agreement with Sweden for the purchase of 16 Saab Gripen E fighter jets, marking a major expansion of Kyiv’s air combat capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Zelensky said the deal was concluded with Sweden and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air force and long-term defence capacity.
“Together with Sweden, we continue strengthening Ukraine’s combat aviation,” Zelensky said, adding that the aircraft package includes not only the jets but also associated equipment, technical assistance, and logistical support.
The agreement builds on earlier understandings between Kyiv and Stockholm, under which Ukraine is also expected to receive an initial batch of 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft in early 2027.
The Swedish government has been one of Ukraine’s key military partners since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, providing a wide range of military aid including armoured vehicles, artillery systems, reconnaissance aircraft and training support.
Zelensky also met Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson to discuss the implementation of the aircraft deal and broader bilateral defence cooperation. Talks also covered preparations for a joint drone initiative and development of anti-ballistic defence capabilities.
“I thank Sweden — its people and government — for the meaningful partnership and constant support since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion,” Zelensky said.
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a multirole fighter jet designed for air-to-air, air-to-ground and reconnaissance missions. Analysts note that the aircraft is particularly suited for dispersed operations, a concept developed during the Cold War when Sweden prepared for potential large-scale conflict scenarios.
The Gripen is compatible with a range of NATO-standard weapons systems, including IRIS-T, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM and Meteor missiles, enhancing its interoperability with Ukraine’s Western-supplied air defence and strike capabilities.
The latest agreement is seen as part of Ukraine’s broader effort to modernize its air force and transition toward Western-standard military aviation systems during its ongoing conflict with Russia. (ILKHA)
