Hurricanes, tropical storms leave six dead in Mexico
Heavy rains and landslides triggered by Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel have left six people dead and five others missing in Mexico, authorities said.
According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Category 1 Hurricane Simon strengthened while moving near Mexico's Pacific coast, bringing heavy rainfall to the states of Nayarit and Sinaloa.
Authorities warned of rising river levels, flooding risks and possible landslides as the storm system continued to affect several regions.
The impacts of Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel were felt particularly in Guerrero and Baja California, where severe rainfall caused flooding and landslides.
In Ensenada, Baja California, around 300 military personnel joined search and rescue operations after flooding damaged homes and swept away vehicles.
Emergency teams continued efforts to locate missing people while authorities assessed damage across affected areas.
Although Simon weakened after moving along Mexico's Pacific coast, officials kept monitoring the situation due to the risk of flash floods, overflowing rivers and mudslides caused by heavy rainfall.
Authorities urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow safety instructions and avoid locations near rivers and flood-prone zones as emergency teams continued response operations. (ILKHA)
