Iran, Russia vow to accelerate strategic partnership at Turkmenistan forum
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to accelerate the implementation of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership which entered into force in early October.
The Iranian leader stressed Tehran's unwavering commitment to the agreement during a meeting on the sidelines of the International Forum on Peace and Trust in Turkmenistan on Friday.
President Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of moving swiftly on the signed agreements, while highlighting ongoing joint initiatives in power plants, transportation, and crucial corridor projects. He informed President Putin that Iran expects to finalize its necessary groundwork for the full implementation of the corridor projects by the end of the year and urged Russia to expedite its reciprocal part of the agreement.
The Iranian President underscored the strategic value of enhancing the North-South and East-West corridors , noting that progress was underway and would gain significant speed with the Russian president's support.
President Pezeshkian also praised the existing agricultural collaboration as a successful model that could be expanded to other sectors. He stressed the necessity for Iran and Russia to enhance their cooperation within international and regional organizations, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS, as a unified front against unilateralism.
For his part, President Putin expressed satisfaction with the growing bilateral relationship, describing the new strategic partnership treaty as a "turning point" and a very important development in Iran-Russia ties.
President Putin highlighted the robust economic growth characterizing the bilateral relationship, noting a significant increase in trade between the two nations. He reported that bilateral trade expanded by 13% last year and continued its upward trajectory with an additional 8% growth recorded in the first nine months of this current year, underscoring the positive momentum in their economic partnership.
Putin confirmed that joint efforts in power plants, infrastructure development, and gas and electricity transfer were continuing. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Moscow's steadfast support for Iran in international forums, particularly at the United Nations, and conveyed warm greetings to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
