Iran says implementation of ceasefire depends on US adherence to commitments
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has urged the United States to fully adhere to its obligations under a recently reached memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war, while pressing Washington to compel Israel to implement the agreement.
Speaking during his regular weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Baghaei emphasized the importance of American compliance. “It is important for us that the US adheres to its commitments and compels the Zionist regime to implement the memorandum of understanding,” he said.
The spokesman’s remarks come amid ongoing regional tensions, with the MoU understood to represent a framework intended to de-escalate hostilities involving Iran.
Baghaei also addressed the anniversary of the 7th of Tir, marking the chemical weapons attack on the Iranian city of Sardasht during the Iran-Iraq War. He described the incident as one of the major humanitarian disasters of the 20th century.
“Iran holds responsible all those who aided Saddam Hussein to conduct chemical attacks,” Baghaei stated, renewing long-standing Iranian accusations against foreign powers that allegedly supported Iraq’s use of chemical weapons in the 1980s.
Turning to bilateral relations, the Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed the enduring strength of ties between Iran and Iraq. He noted that Iraq stood in solidarity with Iran during what he termed the “war of aggression imposed by the US and Israel against Iran.”
The comments reflect Iran’s continued emphasis on historical alliances and grievances as it navigates current diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region following the MoU.
Iran and the United States have been engaged in indirect negotiations in recent months, with both sides signaling interest in de-escalation amid broader Middle East conflicts. (ILKHA)
