Iran stands firm on uranium enrichment rights as nuclear talks with U.S. continue

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei reaffirmed Tehran’s unwavering commitment to its uranium enrichment program during a press briefing on Monday, emphasizing that Iran will not compromise on its right to enrich uranium as part of its peaceful nuclear energy program.
The statement comes as indirect negotiations with the United States over Iran’s nuclear activities remain ongoing, with no date or location yet set for the next round of talks.
Baghaei highlighted that consultations with Oman, which has been facilitating the indirect discussions, are continuing. He noted that any decision on the timing and venue for future talks would be announced in coordination with both Iran and the U.S., but no final arrangements have been confirmed. “Enrichment is an inseparable part of Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program and the nuclear industry, and it must absolutely be preserved,” Baghaei asserted, criticizing the U.S. stance on zero enrichment as evidence of a lack of seriousness in the negotiation process.
The comments follow the fifth round of indirect talks between Iran and the U.S., held in Rome on Friday, May 23, 2025. The negotiations, led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. President Donald Trump’s regional envoy, Steve Witkoff, were described by Baghaei as conducted in a “calm and professional atmosphere.” In a post on his X account Friday evening, Baghaei noted that Iran’s principled positions were “clearly and explicitly explained” during the discussions.
The talks in Rome also involved proposals from Oman’s Foreign Minister aimed at overcoming obstacles in the negotiations. Baghaei stated that the outlines of these proposals were examined, and both sides agreed to further review the ideas in their respective capitals. The Omani Foreign Minister will continue refining the details of the proposed solutions, which will be shared with Iran and the U.S. for further consideration. The date and location of the next round of talks will be announced later.
The ongoing negotiations are part of efforts to address longstanding tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes, while the U.S. and other Western powers have raised concerns about potential military applications. The discussions, mediated by Oman, reflect cautious attempts to find a diplomatic resolution, though Baghaei’s remarks underscore Iran’s firm stance on maintaining its nuclear capabilities. (ILKHA)
