Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of Iran, on Saturday strongly condemned what he described as a U.S. missile strike targeting a freshwater desalination plant on the country’s southern Qeshm Island.

In a post published on the social media platform X, Araghchi said the facility had been destroyed in a missile attack reportedly launched from the U.S. military base in Naval Support Activity Bahrain (Juffair).

“The United States committed a blatant and desperate crime by attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island,” Araghchi wrote, adding that the strike had disrupted water supplies to approximately 30 villages in the area.

The Iranian foreign minister warned that targeting civilian infrastructure constituted a “dangerous move with grave consequences,” amid rapidly escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Iranian Officials Condemn Attack

Separately, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, also condemned the strike. Writing on his X account, Ghalibaf said the attack on the desalination facility had been carried out with support from an air base located in a neighboring southern country.

The alleged strike comes amid heightened regional hostilities following recent military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Iran Claims Retaliatory Strike on U.S. Base

In response to the attack, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Saturday that it had launched retaliatory strikes against a U.S. base in Bahrain.

According to the IRGC, the operation involved solid-fuel and liquid-fuel precision-guided missiles targeting American military installations in the kingdom.

Escalating Regional Conflict

The latest developments follow a dramatic escalation in hostilities that began on Feb. 28, when Israel and the United States reportedly launched coordinated attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities.

Iran responded with multiple waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military bases across the Middle East.

The ongoing confrontation has heightened fears of a wider regional war, with analysts warning that attacks on critical infrastructure and military facilities could further destabilize the already volatile security landscape of West Asia.
