Israeli drone strike kills civilian in southern Lebanon despite ceasefire
A civilian was killed on Tuesday morning after an Israeli drone targeted a vehicle near the Bint Jbeil district in southern Lebanon, according to field sources and local authorities.
The strike hit a car traveling along a rural road, heightening tensions along the Lebanese–Israeli border amid repeated violations reported in recent weeks.
Lebanese civil defense teams said the victim, identified as Ali Sheaito, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the attack. Municipal officials described the incident as a “direct and deliberate assault on a civilian target,” noting that no clashes or military activity had been reported in the area at the time.
Residents in Bint Jbeil and nearby villages reported intensified drone activity on Tuesday morning, including low-altitude flights. Monitoring groups also observed Israeli reconnaissance operations over agricultural lands and construction zones, raising fears of further escalation.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry and regional officials have warned in recent months that recurring drone strikes have endangered civilian movement and disrupted daily life in multiple southern towns.
Diplomatic sources said Türkiye is following the developments closely. Ankara reiterated its call for restraint and urged the international community to take steps to prevent additional violations of Lebanese sovereignty. Turkish officials noted that continued Israeli attacks risk widening the conflict at a time of heightened humanitarian concerns in the region.
The incident adds to a series of Israeli cross-border operations reported since early autumn, including previous strikes on vehicles and residential areas near the frontier. Lebanese authorities said the latest attack highlights the need for stronger international monitoring and accountability measures. (ILKHA)
