Nuremberg Airport temporarily closed after emergency landing under Eurofighter escort
Flight operations at Germany's Nuremberg Airport were temporarily suspended after a passenger aircraft arriving from the Greek island of Corfu made an emergency landing under the escort of German Air Force Eurofighter fighter jets.
The incident briefly disrupted air traffic at the airport as emergency procedures were activated and security measures were put in place following the aircraft's arrival.
According to German media reports, the passenger plane was escorted by two Eurofighter jets after entering German airspace before landing safely at Nuremberg Airport.
Airport operations temporarily suspended
Following the landing, security forces launched precautionary checks and temporarily halted flight operations at the airport.
Authorities initially did not disclose the reason for the emergency or explain why the fighter jets had been deployed.
Later, Corendon Airlines said the aircraft had accidentally transmitted the internationally recognized 7500 emergency code, which indicates a possible hijacking, due to a temporary malfunction in its radio communication system.
The airline stressed that there was no actual security threat and that neither passengers nor crew were ever in danger.
After security inspections confirmed there was no threat, German police gave the all-clear and airport operations gradually resumed.
According to airport officials, several flights were delayed and two aircraft were diverted during the temporary closure.
The incident came a day after another disruption at Nuremberg Airport caused by a suspected drone sighting.
German police said three pilots independently reported seeing an unidentified object in the air between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.
Despite a search operation, authorities were unable to locate the suspected drone, and no evidence of its presence was found.(ILKHA)
