More than 30 earthquakes have struck the Aegean Sea in the past 24 hours, including two consecutive tremors on Sunday evening with magnitudes of 4.5 and 4.4, raising concerns over seismic activity in the region.
According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the first tremor, measuring 4.5 in magnitude, occurred at 8:41 p.m. local time at a depth of 10.45 kilometers. Just five minutes later, at 8:45 p.m. local time, two consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.0 were recorded at depths of 7 and 6.99 kilometers, respectively.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reportedly decided to hold an emergency meeting in response to the ongoing tremors. Greece, like Türkiye, sits on multiple fault lines and frequently experiences seismic activity.
Authorities in Greece have also issued precautionary measures for residents and visitors on the island of Santorini following increased seismic activity in the area. While no significant damage has been reported, the earthquakes have heightened concerns as they come just days before the first anniversary of the devastating February 6, 2023, earthquake in Türkiye.
Over the past 24 hours, seismic activity in the Aegean Sea has ranged between magnitudes of 1.3 to 4.8, with eight tremors registering between 4.0 and 4.8 in magnitude. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols. (ILKHA)
