Pakistan PM says Iran is 'sincere' in pursuit of Middle East peace
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly endorsed Iran’s diplomatic efforts, praising the Islamic Republic’s leadership for its dignified, responsible, and sincere approach to de-escalating tensions with the United States.
Speaking in the Swiss town of Bürgenstock, where discussions linked to the recently signed memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran are continuing, Sharif said Iranian officials have managed the situation with a focus on de-escalation and regional stability.
According to Pakistani media reports, Sharif highlighted the role played by Iran's senior leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The Pakistani premier said the Iranian leadership has approached the crisis with dignity and responsibility, emphasizing that Tehran's stated commitment to peace in the Middle East should be taken seriously.
"I believe the Iranian leadership is truly sincere in supporting peace in the region," Sharif said, adding that Iranian officials have consistently sought to lower tensions and encourage dialogue.
Sharif also commented on the role of the United States in the negotiations, expressing confidence in the intentions of U.S. President Donald Trump.
"I think President Trump is sincere as well. I have no doubt that he is a man of peace," Sharif stated, voicing optimism about the prospects for continued diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
The remarks come as diplomatic efforts intensify in Switzerland following the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing a framework for broader negotiations on political, security, and regional issues. Officials from both countries are seeking to build on recent progress and transform preliminary understandings into a more comprehensive agreement.
Observers view Pakistan's support for the talks as significant, reflecting Islamabad's longstanding interest in regional stability and its desire to see disputes resolved through diplomacy rather than confrontation.
The negotiations have attracted international attention due to their potential implications for security in the Middle East, maritime stability, and broader regional relations. While challenges remain, supporters of the diplomatic process argue that sustained dialogue offers the best opportunity to reduce tensions and prevent future conflict.
As discussions continue in Switzerland, regional and international actors are closely monitoring developments, hoping that the negotiations will pave the way for a lasting framework for peace and cooperation. (ILKHA)
