Pro-Palestine rallies sweep Latin America and Europe, calling for end to Gaza war
Pro-Palestine demonstrations swept cities across Latin America and Europe over the weekend, as thousands of people took to the streets to mark three years since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, demand an end to the ongoing assault and call on governments to halt military and political support for Israel.
The mobilizations, held from October 9 to 11, were part of a global campaign launched by the Global Alliance for Palestine, which said more than 200 organizations across over 60 countries had joined the initiative. Grassroots movements, trade unions, student groups, human rights organizations and civil society bodies participated in coordinated actions calling for accountability for Israeli violations and an end to the war.
Latin America Mobilizes in Solidarity with Palestine
Across Latin America, solidarity marches and public gatherings took place from Mexico to Chile, Uruguay, Brazil and Peru, reflecting growing demands for governments to take a stronger stance against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
In Mexico City, hundreds of demonstrators marched from the Angel of Independence monument toward a location known among Palestine solidarity activists as “Free Palestine Square.” Carrying Palestinian flags, they called for an end to the assault on Gaza and renewed international support for the Palestinian people.
In Chile, thousands marched through central Santiago following calls from student groups, trade unions and human rights organizations. Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and carried banners condemning Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Thousands also took part in a march in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, under the slogan “Free Palestine or Barbarism.” Participants urged the government to adopt a firmer position toward Israel, while solidarity activities were also reported in other cities.
In Brazil, trade unions and social movements organized pro-Palestine gatherings, particularly in São Paulo. The country’s Unified Workers’ Central (CUT) announced the participation of a health-sector bloc in a campaign demanding the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, and other detained Palestinian health workers.
The campaign also called for the protection of hospitals, medical personnel and healthcare facilities amid the devastating impact of Israel’s military operations on Gaza’s healthcare system.
In Peru, student unions, human rights organizations and Palestine solidarity groups joined the international mobilization, pressing the government to clarify its position on the war and its relations with Israel.
Berlin Protesters Demand Germany End Military Support for Israel
The wave of demonstrations extended to Europe, where around 3,500 people gathered in Berlin, according to police figures, to demand an end to Israel’s assault on Gaza and an end to German military support for Israel.
Organized by the group United for Palestine, the march began between the German Chancellery and the Bundestag as part of the global day of action.
Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans calling for an end to the war and urging the German government to stop backing Israel, particularly through military assistance. Tensions were reported during the march amid confrontations with supporters of Israel.
Similar demonstrations took place in London, Milan, Rome and Warsaw, where participants demanded an end to the assault on Gaza and called on their governments to stop supplying weapons to Israel and providing political support for its actions.
Global Solidarity Campaign Seeks Political Action
The coordinated mobilizations demonstrated that Palestine remains a central issue in public debate across continents, with solidarity movements seeking to translate street protests into sustained political pressure.
Beyond demonstrations, trade unions, student organizations, healthcare workers and human rights groups have increasingly joined coordinated campaigns demanding accountability, protection for Palestinian civilians and an end to international support for Israel’s military operations.
As Palestinians in Gaza continue to face the consequences of the war, protesters across Latin America and Europe renewed their call for governments to move beyond statements of concern and take concrete measures to help end the assault, protect Palestinian lives and uphold international law.
