Russia says Ukrainian drone attack kills worker at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
A worker at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, which said the strike also targeted two facilities inside the plant. Ukraine has not commented on the allegation.
Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev said a drone struck a vehicle delivering food to plant personnel, killing the driver, who was an employee of the nuclear facility.
Likhachev said two Ukrainian drones also struck a laboratory building and a radioactive waste processing facility at the site. Plant officials reported damage to the roof of one building but said there were no additional casualties and no threat to nuclear safety.
The laboratory building is located about 200 metres from power units 4 and 5. Russian-installed officials also accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out repeated attacks on infrastructure linked to the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant in recent weeks, saying the strikes had affected facilities supporting the nuclear plant's external power supply. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed damage to power-related infrastructure but has not attributed responsibility for the attacks.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest nuclear facility, has remained under Russian control since 2022 and has repeatedly been at the centre of mutual accusations by Moscow and Kyiv over attacks that could endanger nuclear safety. The IAEA has consistently called on all parties to refrain from military activities near nuclear facilities.(ILKHA)
