Russia has called on Afghanistan and Pakistan to resolve escalating border tensions through dialogue, urging restraint and condemning recent military actions that have raised concerns over civilian casualties along the frontier.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow is closely monitoring the situation and stressed that disputes between the two neighbors should be addressed through political and diplomatic channels rather than military escalation.

Russia’s appeal comes amid renewed cross-border clashes and reported air and ground strikes in border regions, which have heightened tensions between Taliban-led Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to regional reports, recent exchanges of fire have resulted in civilian casualties and displacement in several border districts, though figures remain difficult to independently verify due to restricted access.

Moscow said it “condemns violence” and warned that continued escalation risks further destabilizing an already fragile regional security environment. It called on both sides to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to broader confrontation.

Diplomatic sources say Russia has stepped up engagement with both Kabul and Islamabad in recent weeks, seeking to prevent the dispute from spilling over into wider instability in Central and South Asia. Analysts note that Moscow has increasingly positioned itself as a regional mediator, particularly following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

The latest tensions reportedly stem from long-running disputes over border security, militant activity, and accusations of cross-border incursions. Pakistan has previously accused armed groups operating from Afghan territory of carrying out attacks inside its borders, while Afghan authorities have denied providing safe haven to such groups.

In recent days, both sides have exchanged strong statements, with Islamabad reportedly conducting targeted strikes in border areas it says were linked to militant threats. Afghan officials have condemned the strikes as violations of sovereignty and warned of retaliation if such operations continue.

Regional observers say the situation remains volatile, with fears that continued escalation could undermine trade routes, displacement patterns, and already fragile humanitarian conditions along the Durand Line.
