Russian strike hits Zaporizhzhia: 5 killed, at least 10 injured
A Russian airstrike late Thursday evening devastated a residential area in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing five people and injuring at least ten others, according to regional authorities.
The deadly assault targeted the Shevchenkivskyi district, striking apartment blocks, shops, and nearby public facilities, marking the latest attack on the city which has been repeatedly hit in recent weeks.
Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that the attack occurred around 22:00 local time. Russian forces utilized a high-explosive glide bomb, which caused widespread destruction upon impact.
"The assault occurred around 22:00 local time, when Russian forces launched a high-explosive glide bomb, causing severe damage to apartment blocks, shops, and nearby structures," Governor Fedorov stated.
Emergency responders at the scene noted that the number of injured is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue through the massive piles of rubble. Several of the wounded were reportedly transported to local hospitals in critical condition.
Local officials described widespread devastation at the impact site, including shattered windows, collapsed sections of buildings, and debris scattered across the streets. Search teams worked throughout the night clearing the wreckage.
Ukrainian authorities strongly condemned the strike, characterizing it as another deliberate attack on civilian areas. They emphasized that despite the clear targeting of residential areas, no details were provided regarding any potential military or infrastructure targets.
Officials warned that the threat of further Russian bombardments remains highly likely as fighting intensifies along the southern axis of the front line. (ILKHA)
