Seven killed as firefighting helicopter crashes in western Argentina
The Bell 412 helicopter had been deployed in operations to combat wildfires in Ischigualasto Natural Park before heading to neighboring La Rioja Province to support firefighters battling another blaze.
San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego confirmed the tragedy in a statement posted on social media.
"With profound sorrow we received the news of the helicopter accident that occurred in our province, in which seven people sadly lost their lives," Orrego said.
According to provincial authorities, those killed included firefighters, police officers and civil protection personnel, all of whom were participating in emergency wildfire response operations.
Emergency services said the helicopter lost contact with its base on Wednesday morning while flying toward La Rioja, prompting a search operation that later confirmed the aircraft had crashed.
Officials have not yet released details on the exact location of the crash or the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families.
Authorities said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine weather conditions, the aircraft's mechanical condition and flight data as part of the inquiry.
The crash comes as several regions of Argentina continue to battle seasonal wildfires, with emergency crews working to contain fires that have threatened natural reserves and nearby communities.
Government officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and praised the dedication of the emergency personnel who lost their lives while responding to the wildfire emergency.
The Bell 412 is widely used around the world for firefighting, search-and-rescue and emergency response missions because of its versatility and ability to operate in challenging terrain. Authorities said further information will be released as the investigation progresses. (ILKHA)
