Syria welcomes UN Security Council’s call to respect its sovereignty
The Syrian government has welcomed the UN Security Council’s unanimous reaffirmation of the need to respect the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and uphold Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.
Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said it welcomed Security Council members’ emphasis that all states must respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The council’s position was outlined in a statement delivered by Greece, which holds the council presidency this month, following consultations on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
The 1974 agreement established arrangements for separating Syrian and Israeli forces following the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, with UNDOF tasked with monitoring the ceasefire arrangements and supervising the area of separation in the Golan Heights.
The Syrian statement followed Damascus’ diplomatic efforts at the international level and a recent visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Syria. During the visit, Guterres met residents in Quneitra province and UNDOF personnel to assess conditions and reported Israeli violations in the area.
A visit by the UN under-secretary-general for peace operations was also expected, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.
Syria reiterated its support for the United Nations and UNDOF, commending the force’s work in carrying out its mandate and documenting alleged Israeli violations.
The ministry stressed the importance of protecting UNDOF personnel and ensuring they have the freedom of movement necessary to perform their duties without obstruction.
Damascus also reaffirmed its commitment to exercising its full sovereign rights and adhering to the principles of the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions.
It said respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity was essential to strengthening regional and international peace and security.
The 1974 Disengagement Agreement remains a key framework governing the separation of Syrian and Israeli forces in the Golan Heights, an area whose status and security have remained central to tensions between the two sides. (ILKHA)
