Syrian authorities, Druze leaders agree to prosecute attackers after deadly Jaramana clashes

Syrian authorities and Druze community representatives have reached an agreement to prosecute those responsible for a deadly attack that sparked sectarian violence in Jaramana, a suburb of Damascus, officials confirmed Tuesday.
The clashes, which claimed the lives of seven security personnel and seven Druze fighters, erupted following an attack that heightened tensions in the area. Rabih Mounzer, a member of Jaramana’s civilian coordination group, announced that the agreement aims to hold perpetrators accountable and includes measures to curb sectarian and regional incitement, with the goal of restoring calm.
The violence comes against a backdrop of regional instability, exacerbated by Israel’s efforts to engage Syria’s Druze community since October 7, 2023. Syria’s Druze have historically resisted foreign interference, including from Israel, which has accused the Syrian government of persecuting the sect and hinted at potential military intervention to “protect” them.
Tensions have further intensified since the fall of Bashar Assad’s government in December, with Israel expanding its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, seizing a demilitarized buffer zone in violation of the 1974 Syria-Israel disengagement agreement.
The Syrian government reiterated its commitment to protecting all sectarian groups equally, as it works to stabilize the region and counter foreign encroachment on its sovereignty. The situation in Jaramana remains fragile, with authorities urging unity to prevent further unrest. (ILKHA)
