On Sunday, thousands of Moroccans once again took to the streets of their capital city, Rabat, to call for an immediate end to their country’s diplomatic ties with zionist occupation regime.
The protesters denounced israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and demanded the abrogation of the normalization agreement established in late 2020.
In 2020, Morocco and israel established diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords, a series of agreements brokered by the United States. Similar moves were made by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. As part of the deal, Rabat received Washington’s recognition of its claim to sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
Since Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, large-scale demonstrations have erupted across Morocco, expressing opposition to the normalization of relations with Israel. Protesters carried banners reading “Normalization is treason” and “Stop the massacre” as they gathered in front of Morocco’s parliament building.
