Three drown in Rhine River while seeking relief from Germany heatwave
A severe heatwave escalating across Germany has led to a fatal incident after three individuals drowned while swimming in the Rhine River to cool off.
Hessen Police authorities confirmed that emergency services recovered the body of a 50-year-old man in the Biblis region after his family had reported him missing on Saturday.
Following an intensive search and rescue operation focused around the riverbanks, rescue teams located the individual several days after he entered the water.
During the active search operations, local authorities received additional emergency alerts regarding two other individuals who had disappeared after entering the Rhine.
Subsequent deployment of specialized recovery teams resulted in the retrieval of the bodies of two men, aged 23 and 27, in the same general sector.
Data compiled by the German Lifesaving Society (DLRG) indicates a rising trajectory in regional water fatalities, with 19 drownings recorded in the state of Hessen so far, compared to 12 total incidents in the previous annual period.
Safety experts and local media continue to warn against the river's deceptive surface, highlighting that heavy commercial ship traffic creates powerful undercurrents and sudden hydraulic suctions that can pull even experienced swimmers under.
Additionally, officials stress that entering the cold water during extreme heatwaves can trigger sudden cardiovascular shock, making swimming strictly prohibited across major municipal sectors including Düsseldorf, Cologne, Neuss, and Duisburg. (ILKHA)
