Trump says South Africa will be barred from 2026 G20 Summit in Florida
The U.S. President announced that South Africa will not be invited to the next G20 Leaders’ Summit, citing a diplomatic dispute at the previous meeting and renewed accusations rejected by Pretoria.
US President Donald Trump announced that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the next G20 Summit, scheduled to take place in December 2026 in Miami, Florida. The decision comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions following disagreements at the conclusion of the 2025 summit in South Africa.
In a statement shared on his social media account, Trump said South African officials had “refused to hand over the presidency to a senior representative of the U.S. Embassy during the closing ceremony of the last summit.” He added: “Therefore, under my instruction, South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit to be held in Miami, Florida.”
Trump also announced that all U.S. payments and subsidies to South Africa would be halted immediately. Repeating allegations he has expressed previously, he accused the South African government of committing human rights violations against descendants of European settlers, claiming that “white people are being killed and their farms are being taken away.” South Africa has consistently rejected these accusations as unfounded and politically motivated.
According to a report by CNN citing an unnamed source, the White House is considering inviting Poland to the 2026 summit in place of South Africa. The channel noted that Poland has been actively seeking G20 membership and is viewed by Washington as a potential alternative participant.
If South Africa is ultimately excluded, it would mark the first time in two decades that a country is denied participation in a G20 summit at the request of the host nation.
The United States previously boycotted the November 22–23, 2025 summit hosted by South Africa, further deepening tensions between the two countries. (ILKHA)
