Trump: US will continue talks with Iran despite declaring ceasefire over
The United States has agreed to continue negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, even as US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire between the two sides has ended, highlighting Washington's contradictory approach toward diplomacy and regional tensions.
In a post published on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said that Iran had requested the continuation of negotiations and confirmed that Washington had accepted.
"Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!" Trump wrote.
His remarks come despite repeated statements by Iranian officials emphasizing that the Islamic Republic remains committed to defending its sovereignty while pursuing diplomacy based on mutual respect and national interests.
Earlier this week in Ankara, Trump claimed that the April 8 ceasefire, which had brought an end to weeks of intense military confrontation, was effectively over. He also resorted to inflammatory rhetoric against Iranian officials while asserting that any future negotiations would depend on Tehran's return to the negotiating table.
The US president added that he intended to consult businessman-turned-envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom have been involved in contacts related to Iran.
The latest developments underscore the inconsistent messaging emanating from Washington, which on one hand signals a willingness to continue diplomatic engagement while simultaneously declaring the ceasefire finished and maintaining military pressure in the region.
Recent days have witnessed renewed exchanges between the two sides following continued US military actions in the region. Iran has reaffirmed that its military responses are defensive in nature and are aimed at safeguarding the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security against American aggression and destabilizing policies.
Observers note that despite heightened tensions, Washington's decision to keep diplomatic channels open reflects a recognition that dialogue with the Islamic Republic remains essential for addressing regional security issues. Iranian officials have consistently maintained that meaningful negotiations can only succeed if conducted on the basis of equality, respect, and without threats or coercion. (ILKHA)
