UAE opens investigation into Flydubai flight incident
The United Arab Emirates has launched an official investigation into the incident aboard a Flydubai passenger aircraft en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, with prosecutors examining whether the episode was premeditated or linked to terrorist activity.
According to the UAE's state news agency WAM, Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered the formation of a specialised team of public prosecutors to investigate the incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073.
The aircraft was forced to divert from its scheduled route and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a security incident occurred during the flight.
Investigation focuses on possible motives
The Attorney General instructed the investigation team to work in coordination with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether it involved prior planning, criminal intent or any terrorist purpose.
WAM said the UAE judiciary has jurisdiction over the case because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and operates under the country's flag.
Cockpit incident prompted emergency diversion
Flydubai confirmed that an altercation occurred in the cockpit during the flight and said cabin crew responded in accordance with established safety procedures before the aircraft was safely diverted to Tabuk.
The airline said both pilots sustained injuries and received medical treatment, while all passengers and the remaining crew members were reported safe. Flydubai added that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigations and urged the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is completed.
Saudi Arabia's National Transport Safety Center has also opened a parallel investigation into the aviation safety aspects of the emergency landing, while coordinating with the relevant authorities as the inquiry continues.
The investigation is expected to determine the full sequence of events, establish the motives behind the incident and clarify whether any criminal or terrorist elements were involved.(ILKHA)
