UK probes Salmonella outbreak after one death and 207 infections
British health authorities are investigating a nationwide Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that has claimed one life and sickened 207 people, with preliminary findings indicating the infections may be linked to foods prepared with eggs imported from outside the United Kingdom.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said 207 laboratory-confirmed cases were identified between Aug. 11, 2025, and Aug. 1, 2026, with 206 infections recorded during 2026. Whole-genome sequencing found that all cases belonged to the same genetic cluster, suggesting a common source of contamination.
The majority of infections were reported in England, which recorded 199 cases, while Scotland reported six cases and Wales and Northern Ireland each recorded one. London was the worst-affected area with 47 confirmed infections, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber with 38. Patients ranged in age from infants to people in their 90s.
Health officials said 38% of patients required hospital treatment, while two people developed life-threatening bloodstream infections. One death has been linked to the outbreak. Authorities noted that most infected people recover without medical treatment, although severe illness can occur among infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
Investigators believe many of the affected patients consumed food prepared outside their homes, particularly at restaurants, cafés and other catering establishments. While imported eggs remain the leading line of inquiry, officials stressed that the source of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed and that there is currently no evidence linking the outbreak to eggs or poultry produced in the UK.
UKHSA is working with the Food Standards Agency and other public health authorities to trace the source of the contamination and prevent additional infections. Officials have advised the public to maintain good food hygiene, thoroughly cook eggs and poultry products, wash hands before handling food and seek medical advice if symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps or vomiting develop.
