Ukrainian drone attack targets Wildberries facility near Moscow
Ukrainian forces carried out a major overnight drone attack targeting several cities across Russia’s Moscow Oblast on Aug. 16, damaging a warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries and setting fire to logistics facilities, according to Russian officials.
Moscow Oblast Governor Andrey Vorobyov said a fire broke out at a Wildberries warehouse in the village of Koledino, near Moscow, after the facility was struck during the attack. Footage purportedly showing the incident was also circulated by monitoring channel Exilenova Plus.
Another fire was reported at the Severnoye Domodedovo production and logistics complex in the city of Domodedovo amid the overnight strikes, according to the outlet.
Vorobyov claimed that Russian air defenses intercepted 187 Ukrainian drones over Moscow Oblast during the night. The reported interceptions occurred across several locations, including Domodedovo, Podolsk, Stupino, Odintsovo, Naro-Fominsk, Ramenskoye, Chekhov, Kolomna, Kashira and Yegoryevsk.
The governor described the incident as one of the most massive drone attacks against the Moscow region in recent memory. He also claimed that one person was killed in the attacks.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin gave a higher figure, claiming that Russian air defenses had intercepted as many as 201 drones over the region. He further alleged that approximately 600 unmanned aerial vehicles had been headed toward Moscow Oblast in total.
The overnight attacks were not limited to the Moscow region. Russian authorities also reported strikes in southwestern Rostov Oblast.
Rostov Oblast Governor Yuri Slyusar claimed that Russian forces had downed 150 drones and missiles over three cities and nine districts. According to Slyusar, the attacks killed five people and injured another.
The reported strikes represent another major escalation in the ongoing long-range drone campaign targeting Russian territory, with Ukrainian forces increasingly carrying out attacks against military, industrial, energy and logistics infrastructure far from the front lines. (ILKHA)
