UNRWA: Urgent international support needed to rebuild Gaza
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized that sustainable recovery in Gaza depends on both strong political commitment and robust humanitarian support, highlighting the urgent need to restore critical infrastructure and public services.
Speaking in the wake of the fragile ceasefire, Lazzarini stated that despite the relative calm, Gaza faces severe obstacles to reconstruction. He underscored that many residents still struggle with access to shelter, food, and clean water, and that the approaching winter could exacerbate already critical living conditions.
The UNRWA chief called for the unhindered entry of humanitarian supplies and personnel to ensure effective aid operations, stressing that any reconstruction effort must be linked to reliable public services and a clear path to lasting peace.
Lazzarini also emphasized the importance of sustaining existing public institutions and leveraging UNRWA and Palestinian staff expertise in education, health, and social services. He specifically highlighted the need to return children to schools, calling it a critical investment for societal stability and peace.
“Lasting recovery in Gaza requires both trust and political stability, as well as a reduction in isolation among Palestinians,” Lazzarini said. He added that cooperation and commitment to justice are fundamental to achieving durable peace.
This statement aligns with international concerns raised by multiple news outlets, including The Guardian and Times of Israel, which have reported that UNRWA’s active role is critical for reconstruction and humanitarian response in Gaza. The agency’s call for political will and international support reflects ongoing efforts to prevent further deterioration of living conditions and to ensure a sustainable recovery for the besieged enclave.(ILKHA)
