US cancels Iran peace talks in Switzerland amid relentless Israeli aggression in Lebanon
The United States has called off planned peace talks with Iran in Switzerland, casting doubt on the future of the fragile truce Tehran helped shape through its steadfast resistance.
Swiss authorities confirmed that the negotiations, scheduled for the Burgenstock resort, would not take place on Friday after US Vice President JD Vance abruptly dropped his travel plans. Despite Iran’s expressed readiness for technical discussions following the 14-point interim accord signed on Wednesday, Washington’s last-minute cancellation underscores the unpredictability and inconsistency of American diplomacy.
The White House cited logistical issues, claiming negotiations have “never been simple.” However, many observers see this as further evidence of hesitation in Washington after Iran forced the US into an agreement far short of its initial war aims.
The interim pact, which extends the ceasefire by at least 60 days, represents a significant achievement for Iranian diplomacy and resilience. It includes major sanctions relief, the unfreezing of tens of billions in Iranian assets, immediate waivers for oil exports, and the establishment of a $300 billion reconstruction fund.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei accurately characterized Trump’s decision to sign the deal as driven by “desperation.” Despite launching an unprovoked war on February 28 alongside Israel, the United States failed to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities, dismantle its regional influence, or weaken the Islamic Republic’s resolve.
Instead of the “unconditional surrender” Trump once demanded, Iran secured favorable terms: retaining control of its highly enriched uranium (with only onsite down-blending), maintaining standard IAEA inspections as an NPT member, and preserving its sovereign right to defend itself and support regional allies.
Critics of the Trump administration now admit that Iran stands in a stronger position than before the conflict. The Islamic Republic successfully withstood direct attacks from the US and Israel, demonstrated its strategic leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, and gained valuable economic concessions. Tehran has made clear it will not accept excessive American demands in upcoming nuclear negotiations and will continue asserting its rights in the strategic waterway in coordination with Oman.
The US-Iran agreement explicitly calls for an end to fighting across all fronts, including Lebanon. Yet Israel, sidelined from the talks, continues its aggressive campaign against Hezbollah and Lebanese civilians. Fresh Israeli strikes on Friday killed at least 15 people, according to Lebanon’s NNA, even as over a million Lebanese remain displaced by the violence.
This blatant defiance raises serious questions about Washington’s ability to control its ally and deliver on its commitments. Trump’s growing public criticism of Israeli operations in Lebanon marks one of the deepest rifts between the two countries in decades, further exposing fractures in the US-led axis.
While oil prices eased slightly on Friday with the partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the human and economic toll of the US-initiated war — which killed thousands and disrupted global markets — remains heavy, particularly on the American side, where the Pentagon is seeking $80 billion in additional funding.
As Iran moves forward with dignity and strength, the cancellation of talks in Switzerland places the burden squarely on the United States to demonstrate genuine commitment to peace rather than continued pressure and broken promises. Tehran has shown it is prepared for serious negotiations — but only on the basis of mutual respect and realism. (ILKHA)
