U.S. embassy in Baghdad urges citizens not to travel to Iraq after Erbil drone attack
The US Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens in Iraq to remain on maximum alert following a drone attack targeting Erbil, while reiterating its Level 4 travel advisory that warns citizens not to travel to Iraq under any circumstances.
In a security alert issued after the July 15 drone attack in Erbil, the embassy advised US citizens in Iraq to exercise heightened vigilance, monitor local media, and follow instructions issued by Iraqi authorities.
The U.S. embassy warned that the security situation in Iraq could deteriorate rapidly and noted that Iraqi airspace may be closed without prior notice, potentially disrupting commercial flights.
Travelers planning to use airports in Erbil, Baghdad, Basra, or Sulaymaniyah were advised to confirm the status of their flights with airlines before departure.
The embassy also reaffirmed its existing Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for Iraq, warning of the risks posed by terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest. It said the US government's ability to provide emergency assistance to its citizens remains limited in some parts of the country.
Despite the mandatory departure of some diplomatic personnel, the US Embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate General in Erbil continue to operate.
American citizens requiring consular assistance were encouraged to contact the diplomatic missions via email.(ILKHA)
