Zelensky reaffirms constructive engagement on U.S. peace plan as Geneva talks advance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv remains committed to working “as constructively as possible” on the steps proposed by the United States, as negotiations on the draft peace plan continued in Geneva with updated elements more aligned with Ukraine’s national interests.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that discussions on the U.S.-proposed peace plan are progressing in Geneva, noting that initial feedback from the Ukrainian delegation indicates that several components of the revised draft now reflect Ukraine’s strategic vision and essential national priorities.
Zelensky said he had been briefed by the team participating in the talks, adding, “Ukraine is determined to work as constructively as possible on the steps proposed by the United States.” He emphasized that Kyiv’s efforts remain focused on ending the war, restoring peace, and ensuring lasting security.
A joint U.S.–Ukraine statement released on Sunday confirmed that the Geneva meetings had produced an “updated and refined” peace framework, with both sides reporting “meaningful progress” in aligning positions. The document stressed that any final agreement must uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure a just and sustainable peace.
Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak noted that the Ukrainian delegation is working alongside security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany, expressing readiness for further meetings to secure a comprehensive peace arrangement.
Meanwhile, European partners — particularly the E3 (Britain, France, Germany) — have submitted significant amendments to the U.S. draft. Their proposal calls for increasing Ukraine’s allowed troop cap from 600,000 to 800,000, introducing NATO-style security guarantees, and rejecting any provisions that might implicitly recognize Russian control over occupied territories. They also demand that frozen Russian assets remain blocked until Moscow compensates Ukraine for war damages.
In Washington, some political figures criticized elements of the original U.S. draft as being too accommodating to Russia. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded by emphasizing that the proposal represents a U.S.-driven initiative, not a concession to Russian demands.
Zelensky also announced that discussions within the “Coalition of Willing” — a group working on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine — will continue in the coming days, highlighting Kyiv’s insistence on enduring protection beyond a temporary ceasefire. (ILKHA)
