Zelenskyy seeks additional €70 billion from EU, voices frustration with US
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the European Union for at least €70 billion in additional financial support for 2027 while expressing disappointment over recent restrictions affecting Starshield, the military version of SpaceX's Starlink satellite communications system, and Washington's evolving relations with Moscow.
Addressing EU leaders at a summit in Brussels, Zelenskyy said Ukraine's total wartime expenditure is expected to reach €155 billion next year, stressing that additional funding is needed to strengthen the country's defence, weapons procurement and overall resilience.
"We need at least €70 billion more from you for our defence, armaments and resilience. This is a realistic amount, and I ask you to find this support," Zelenskyy said.
Concerns over Starshield restrictions
Speaking later at a press conference, Zelenskyy acknowledged Ukraine's heavy dependence on the US-controlled Starshield system, saying recent speed restrictions had affected the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles and disrupted military logistics.
"Starlink has not been switched off, but the speed limits have been reduced," he said, describing the restrictions as "a very dangerous and unpleasant surprise."
Ukraine has relied extensively on the satellite network for battlefield communications, drone operations and military coordination since the start of the war.
Criticism of Washington's policy toward Moscow
Zelenskyy also criticized Washington over its recent diesel agreement with Moscow and the easing of certain sanctions, saying Kyiv had not been informed in advance of the decisions.
He added that Ukrainian and American negotiating teams remain in contact while emphasizing that Ukraine expects closer coordination with its allies on decisions affecting the country's security and war effort.
The Ukrainian leader's remarks came as European leaders reaffirmed their support for Kyiv amid continuing diplomatic efforts to sustain military and financial assistance as the war with Russia continues.(ILKHA)
