Erdoğan Set for G20 Summit in Johannesburg with strong push for Gaza ceasefire
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, taking place from 21–23 November under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”
Representing economies that make up around 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of world trade, the G20 will gather this year with an expanded format, as the African Union joins the platform as a full member for the first time. The summit is expected to focus on supply chain resilience, energy security, food shortages and widening global inequalities.
President Erdoğan is anticipated to hold bilateral meetings with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as several G20 leaders and heads of international organizations on the sidelines of the summit.
One of the dominant issues on the table will be the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Erdoğan is expected to renew his call for a permanent ceasefire, the establishment of secure humanitarian corridors, and stronger international accountability for human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, mounting geopolitical tensions and the fragility of global economic recovery are also set to feature prominently in leaders’ discussions.
In addition to political and security matters, the summit will review proposals on digital transformation, energy transition, sustainable development and international financing mechanisms aimed at supporting developing nations.
Türkiye is expected to highlight the need for a fairer global governance structure, with Erdoğan underlining that lasting peace and stability can only be achieved through genuine international solidarity and equitable burden-sharing. (ILKHA)
