India: 7 dead, over 70 hospitalized after ammonia gas leak at Tamil Nadu seafood factory
At least seven workers were killed and more than 70 others hospitalized after an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing facility in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, prompting a large-scale emergency response by disaster management authorities.
The incident occurred at a seafood processing factory in the Tiruvallur district, located near the state capital Chennai, according to officials. Authorities said the leak originated from an ammonia-based refrigeration system commonly used in seafood storage and processing operations.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay confirmed the incident in a statement posted on social media, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and assuring that emergency services had been mobilized to assist those affected.
According to reports from public broadcaster All India Radio, seven workers lost their lives as a result of the toxic gas leak, while more than 70 others were rushed to nearby hospitals after experiencing breathing difficulties and other symptoms associated with ammonia exposure.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were deployed to the site shortly after the leak was detected. Specialized chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) response teams also participated in the rescue effort, working to evacuate workers, contain the gas, and secure the facility.
Authorities said the operation was conducted under strict safety protocols to prevent further casualties and limit the spread of hazardous fumes to surrounding areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the families of those killed.
“I am deeply saddened by this tragic accident. I convey my deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this incident,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said.
Officials said medical teams remain on alert as dozens of workers continue to receive treatment. Several victims were reported to be in stable condition, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional complications among those exposed to the toxic gas.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the leak and assess whether safety regulations were properly followed at the facility. Preliminary inquiries are expected to focus on the maintenance of the refrigeration system and workplace safety procedures.
Industrial accidents involving ammonia leaks are considered particularly dangerous because the gas can cause severe respiratory distress, eye injuries, and other life-threatening health effects when inhaled in high concentrations.
The incident has renewed concerns about industrial safety standards in manufacturing and food-processing facilities across India, with labor groups calling for stricter enforcement of workplace safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. (ILKHA)
