A Turkish-flagged bulk carrier transporting coal from Russia to Türkiye came under a drone attack in the Black Sea near the Russian port city of Novorossiysk, leaving one crew member dead and three others injured, according to initial reports.
The vessel, MV Reyhan Sarı, which is registered at the Port of Istanbul, was en route from Russia's Taman Port to the Port of Trabzon carrying a shipment of coal when it was struck off the coast of Novorossiysk.
The attack reportedly caused damage to several sections of the ship, with the engine room sustaining the most significant impact.
Authorities said one crew member lost his life in the attack, while three others suffered injuries.
The wounded received initial medical treatment before being transferred to healthcare facilities, where they remain under medical supervision.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or provided details regarding the severity of the injuries.
Following the incident, additional safety measures were implemented aboard the vessel while technical teams conducted an assessment of the damage.
According to preliminary findings, the MV Reyhan Sarı remains seaworthy and is capable of continuing its voyage after the initial inspection.
Maritime authorities are expected to carry out a more detailed examination once the vessel reaches port.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the origin and nature of the reported drone attack.
No official determination has yet been made regarding responsibility for the strike.
The incident occurred amid ongoing security concerns in the Black Sea, where commercial shipping has faced increasing risks since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.
