Strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off Crete, no immediate damage reported
A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 5.8 struck off the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete on Saturday, shaking parts of the eastern Mediterranean and prompting authorities to monitor the situation closely, according to seismological agencies.southwest of the city of Rethymno on Crete, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
Greek authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage following the tremor. Emergency services and civil protection teams were nevertheless placed on alert as a precaution while assessments continued across the island.
Residents in several areas of Crete reported feeling strong shaking that lasted several seconds. The quake was also reportedly felt in parts of southern Greece and neighboring areas of the eastern Mediterranean, causing concern among residents and tourists. Similar earthquakes in the region have often been felt over wide distances due to their offshore location.
Local authorities urged residents to remain calm while following official guidance regarding potential aftershocks. Seismologists noted that moderate aftershocks are common following earthquakes of this magnitude, although no major secondary tremors had been reported immediately after the event. Previous earthquakes of comparable strength near Crete have generated numerous aftershocks without causing major damage.
Greece is one of Europe's most earthquake-prone countries due to its location at the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country experiences thousands of earthquakes each year, most of which are minor and occur offshore.
Crete and the surrounding Hellenic Arc are among the most seismically active areas in the Mediterranean basin. In recent years, the island has experienced several moderate and strong earthquakes, including tremors above magnitude 5.0 that were widely felt across southern Greece.
The Greek Civil Protection Authority said inspections would continue throughout the day, particularly in older buildings and coastal communities closest to the epicenter. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, and transportation services, airports, and ports on Crete continued operating normally.
Seismologists emphasized that the offshore location of the earthquake likely reduced its impact on populated areas. However, authorities encouraged residents to remain vigilant and prepared for possible aftershocks as monitoring efforts continue.
The latest earthquake serves as another reminder of the region's persistent seismic activity, though officials stressed that Greece's emergency response systems remain well-prepared to respond to significant seismic events should they occur. (ILKHA)
