Lütfi Doğan, the former President of Religious Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Sciences Research and Dissemination Foundation (ISILAY), passed away at the age of 93.
The Foundation for Research and Dissemination of Islamic Sciences, ISILAY, released a statement announcing his death.
"Our former President of Religious Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our Islamic Sciences Research and Dissemination Foundation (ISILAY), Mr. LÜTFİ DOĞAN has passed away. Our deepest condolences. May Allah have mercy on him. May his place be heaven. Information about the funeral prayer and condolences will be announced later," the statement read.
Lütfi Doğan was a Turkish theologian and politician. He was born in Gümüşhane, Turkey in 1930. He learned to read the Quran from his father, Hacı Mehmet Fehmi Efendi, and completed his hifz from his uncle, Hafız Fevzi Efendi. He studied Arabic and religious sciences under Abdurrahman Efendi and Ragıb Efendi, the former mufti of Gümüşhane.
After completing his military service, he continued his religious studies privately. He finished primary school externally and started working as an imam-hatip. He was appointed as the Kemah District Mufti in 1954 and the Erzincan Provincial Mufti in 1960. In the same years, he completed high school and Erzincan High School externally. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Theology with the first degree in the 1964-1965 academic year. After serving as an assistant mufti and preacher in Ankara, he was appointed as an inspector at the Presidency of Religious Affairs. While he was a member of the High Council of Religious Affairs, he was appointed as the Deputy President of Religious Affairs.
On January 15, 1968, he was appointed as the Acting President of Religious Affairs, and he served in this position until August 25, 1972.
He was a member of the Senate of the Republic of Turkey from Erzurum (October 14, 1973 - September 12, 1980) and a member of parliament from Gümüşhane in the XIX, XX, and XXI terms. He knows Arabic, Persian, and French. He was married and has eight children. (ILKHA)
