UN committee adopts resolution on combating modern forms of colonialism
The United Nations Fourth Committee has adopted a draft resolution titled “Combating modern forms of colonialism”, calling for the protection of developing countries’ sovereignty and support for independent development processes free from economic pressure.
The resolution was approved with 85 votes in favour, 49 against and 23 abstentions during the committee’s vote.
The draft emphasises the right of all countries to determine their own political, economic and social development paths without external interference, while addressing concerns over economic pressure mechanisms, unilateral sanctions and practices that restrict technological development.
Resolution highlights sovereignty and development rights
The resolution calls for stronger respect for the sovereignty of developing countries and stresses the importance of protecting their ability to pursue independent economic development.
It also includes provisions related to safeguarding countries’ rights over their natural resources and energy corridors, highlighting the principle that nations should have control over their own economic assets.
Anna Yevstigneyeva, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, said the draft was prepared by the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations and received strong support, particularly from African countries.
Yevstigneyeva said practices involving interference in the internal affairs of states, economic coercion, unilateral restrictive measures and obstacles to technological advancement should be ended.
Debate over modern forms of pressure
The resolution reaffirms that all countries have the right to pursue their own development strategies without external intervention, according to supporters of the measure.
Observers said the decision could strengthen the position of developing countries in international economic and political negotiations by reinforcing discussions over sovereignty, resource control and independent development.(ILKHA)
