Türkiye has achieved another milestone in its rapidly advancing space and communications program with the signing of a capacity agreement between Türksat 6A and Freesat Lanka, one of Sri Lanka’s leading broadcasting platforms.
The agreement marks a historic step for Türkiye, transforming its growing satellite capabilities into exportable global services.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu described the partnership as a strategic development that underscores Türkiye’s emergence as a regional and international power in space technology.
“This agreement is a strategic development, marking the transformation of Türkiye’s space capacity into exportable services in the international market,” said Uraloğlu.
Under the agreement, Freesat Lanka will now be able to broadcast 50 television channels from Sri Lanka uninterrupted via Türksat 6A, starting this month.
Highlighting the high technical standards of both sides, Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that Freesat Lanka’s robust teleport infrastructure, combined with Türksat 6A’s advanced transmission capability, will ensure high-quality and reliable television services across Sri Lanka.
“Thanks to Türksat 6A, high-quality and reliable television services will be delivered in Sri Lanka. With this, the coverage area of Türksat satellites will reach 5 billion people,” he said.
The minister further stressed that this partnership goes beyond simple capacity sharing.
“The 50 television channels in Sri Lanka are now broadcasting via Türksat 6A. This is not just a technical collaboration; it is a clear demonstration of Türkiye’s strength in space and its ambition in the global broadcasting market,” he added.
With this latest agreement, Türkiye continues to extend the operational reach of Türksat 6A, reinforcing its growing role in the international satellite communications industry. The move not only reflects the technological maturity of Türkiye’s domestic space sector but also signals Ankara’s intent to become a major exporter of satellite-based services to emerging markets across Asia and beyond.
