117 dogs found dead at California 'no-kill' shelter
Investigators have uncovered the remains of 117 dogs in various stages of decomposition on the grounds of a purported "no-kill" animal shelter in Northern California, with many of the animals bearing gunshot wounds.
The discovery was made at Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary in northern California during excavation work led by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, following reports of possible mass graves on the property.
Authorities said the search uncovered remains in various stages of decomposition, along with around 600 dog collars, 21 skulls and hundreds of bone fragments scattered across the site.
X-ray examinations of 70 recovered dogs reportedly revealed bullet fragments, strengthening suspicions that firearms were used in multiple killings.
Investigators also identified a barn where some of the alleged killings may have taken place and recovered six standalone microchips from the burial sites. Officials said the microchip data is being analysed in an effort to identify the animals and trace their histories.
The investigation was launched in April after allegations of severe animal cruelty, fraud and conspiracy. Records reviewed by authorities indicate that the facility took in nearly 900 animals since early 2025, while only 116 were recorded as adopted, leaving the fate of hundreds unclear.
Sanctuary owner Shannon Miranda has denied all allegations, insisting the facility operated as a legitimate "no-kill" shelter. She said euthanasia was only carried out in exceptional cases involving animals with untreatable medical conditions or severe behavioural risks.
Authorities said the investigation remains complex and ongoing, involving extensive forensic and documentary evidence. No criminal charges have been filed so far, but officials said the case could be referred to prosecutors if sufficient evidence is established. (ILKHA)
