Afghanistan seeks international aid to strengthen disaster preparedness
Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, has called on the international community to provide financial and technical assistance to help the country address climate change and strengthen its disaster preparedness.
Speaking at a ceremony in Kabul attended by officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, ambassadors and representatives of international organizations, Baradar said Afghanistan contributes relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions but continues to suffer the effects of climate change and natural disasters.
He cited earthquakes, floods and droughts among the major challenges facing the country, stressing that tackling climate change requires shared responsibility and practical cooperation among nations.
Baradar called for international assistance in the form of funding, technical expertise, modern meteorological equipment, early warning systems and rescue tools to improve Afghanistan’s capacity to respond to natural disasters.
He said the Islamic Emirate was also working to reduce disaster risks through measures including the construction of disaster-resistant buildings, the building of retaining walls, and the protection and rehabilitation of forests.
Baradar also expressed appreciation to humanitarian organizations, Afghan businesspeople and investors for their assistance to families affected by natural disasters.
His remarks highlighted Afghanistan’s need for greater international cooperation as it faces growing environmental pressures and remains vulnerable to climate-related hazards and earthquakes. The development of early warning systems and resilient infrastructure is particularly important for reducing casualties and protecting communities in disaster-prone areas. (ILKHA)
