Araghchi: Iran and US reach agreement on fundamental principles in Geneva talks
Iran and the United States have reached an understanding on fundamental principles that will guide the continuation of nuclear negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said following the second round of talks held in Geneva.
The latest round of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington concluded in Geneva, with both sides agreeing on a framework of guiding principles intended to shape the next phase of discussions.
Speaking to Iranian state media after the talks, Araghchi described the negotiations as having made “good progress” compared to the previous round. However, he cautioned that the progress achieved does not mean a final agreement is imminent.
“The fact that we have reached an understanding on fundamental principles does not imply that all differences have been resolved,” Araghchi said, noting that both sides continue to hold positions that will require time and further negotiation to reconcile.
According to the Iranian foreign minister, the two delegations agreed to begin working on draft texts for a potential agreement. The next round of talks will be scheduled after the exchanged draft proposals are reviewed by both parties.
International media reports also indicated that the Geneva discussions focused on narrowing gaps over key nuclear and sanctions-related issues, while maintaining indirect channels of communication between the two countries.
The renewed diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened regional tensions and continued international scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear program. Observers note that while the agreement on guiding principles signals forward movement, substantial political and technical challenges remain before any comprehensive deal can be finalized.
The Geneva talks mark the second round of negotiations in the current diplomatic track aimed at addressing long-standing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities and the lifting of sanctions.(ILKHA)
