At least 26 killed in massive Russian air attack on Kyiv
Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital early Sunday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 100 others, including several children, Ukrainian authorities said.
The assault struck multiple residential areas across Kyiv and nearby communities, causing widespread destruction and prompting ongoing search-and-rescue operations as emergency crews worked through the rubble of damaged apartment buildings.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said one of the most severe strikes hit a residential building in the Podilskyi district, where part of the structure collapsed between the fifth and ninth floors following a missile impact. Images shared by local authorities showed extensive damage to the building's facade and debris scattered across surrounding streets.
Additional strikes were reported in the Podilskyi, Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, while three apartment buildings were damaged in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district.
According to city officials, at least 19 people were killed in Kyiv and more than 90 others were injured, including six children. Emergency services said rescue operations remained underway in the Podil and Darnytsia districts, where authorities feared more victims could still be trapped beneath collapsed structures.
"It is believed there may still be people under the rubble," Ukraine's State Emergency Service said in a statement.
The attack also struck the nearby town of Vyshneve, southwest of Kyiv, where seven people were killed and 29 others injured, emergency officials reported.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said more than 600 residents had been evacuated from the area because of what he described as the "threat of a second detonation." Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the potential danger.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had warned hours earlier that Russia was preparing another large-scale assault on the capital, described the situation in Vyshneve as "difficult" and said emergency responders were working around the clock to assist victims and clear debris.
The latest barrage is among the deadliest attacks on Kyiv in recent months and comes as Russia has intensified its use of missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities. The strikes underscore the continued vulnerability of civilian areas despite Ukraine's efforts to strengthen its air-defense capabilities with support from Western allies.
Ukrainian officials condemned the attack as another deliberate strike on civilian infrastructure and residential neighborhoods, while rescue teams continued searching for survivors late into the evening. Authorities warned that casualty figures could rise as operations progress. (ILKHA)
