At least nine killed, dozens injured in wave of Halloween weekend shootings across US
At least nine people were killed and dozens more injured in a series of shootings across the United States over the Halloween weekend, with gun violence erupting in entertainment districts, near university campuses, at a major college football event and inside retail stores.
Dallas, Texas, recorded the deadliest outbreak, where four people were killed and 15 others injured in three separate shootings in the city's Deep Ellum entertainment district. Further deadly incidents were reported in Alabama, Illinois, Arkansas, California and Michigan, while shootings in Delaware and other locations left numerous people wounded.
The incidents have renewed concerns over gun violence in public spaces, as police departments across the country investigate the attacks and work to identify those responsible.
Three shootings leave four dead in Dallas
Dallas police said three separate shootings occurred in the Deep Ellum neighbourhood within approximately 75 minutes, beginning shortly after midnight on Sunday as crowds gathered for Halloween celebrations.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux confirmed that four people had died and at least 15 others were injured. The shootings took place at separate locations along Elm Street, Main Street and South Crowdus Street.
Investigators have not established whether the incidents were connected or what triggered the gunfire. Police said some injured people had made their own way to hospitals, meaning the casualty figures could change.
“This is a really big scene. It's spread out,” Comeaux said, adding that investigators were questioning people and examining possible links between the incidents.
Dallas police said no officers were injured. Their preliminary account identified three separate crime scenes, while the suspects remained under investigation.
Shooting follows major college football game in Alabama
In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others wounded in a shooting near Legion Field following the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night.
The incident occurred along Graymont Avenue, where vendors had set up stalls near the stadium. Most spectators and families had already left the stadium grounds after the game, according to Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett.
“I am very grateful that more people weren't injured,” Pickett said.
Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person had been detained for questioning and multiple weapons had been recovered.
The Magic City Classic is an annual rivalry between historically Black universities Alabama State and Alabama A&M. Nearly 70,000 fans attended this year's game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28.
Shootings reported near university campuses
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot late Saturday near the University of Delaware campus. All six were taken to hospitals, although authorities had not provided an update on their conditions as of Sunday afternoon.
Video circulated on social media showed people fleeing the scene. Police closed part of Main Street for several hours as they investigated.
In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting early Sunday near Illinois Wesleyan University left a 19-year-old woman dead and another woman in critical condition. Six other people sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening, although authorities had not confirmed whether all had suffered gunshot wounds.
In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds after an early Sunday shooting. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that an altercation had preceded the attack. No arrests had been announced.
Fatal shooting also reported near Little Rock
Another shooting in Arkansas, near a shopping centre southwest of Little Rock, left one man dead and several others injured, according to local police.
The incident added to the growing number of casualties reported across the country during the Halloween weekend.
Two fatal shootings at Halloween stores
The violence also struck retail locations on Friday, when separate shootings at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan left two people dead.
In Fairfield, California, a 31-year-old woman, identified as Constance Hages, was killed and six others were wounded in a shooting inside a store at the Solano Town Center. Hages was pregnant, according to family members. Police described the incident as a targeted attack and said several of the injured victims were in critical condition.
In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot at a Spirit Halloween store north of Detroit. Another man was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening after being assaulted by bystanders as officers took him into custody.
Investigations continue amid wider concerns over gun violence
Authorities in the affected cities are continuing to investigate the shootings, establish possible motives and determine whether any of the incidents were connected.
The latest reports highlight the scale of gun violence affecting public spaces across the country, from crowded entertainment districts and university neighbourhoods to major sporting events and commercial establishments.
With multiple investigations still under way, police have urged anyone with information, photographs or video footage relating to the attacks to contact local authorities. (ILKHA)
