Bulgarian wildfire spreads across border into Greece
A forest wildfire that broke out in southern Bulgaria has crossed the border into northeastern Greece, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation as authorities in both countries work to contain the blaze.
According to Greek media reports, the wildfire, which started in Bulgaria's Ivaylovgrad region, spread across the border into Greece's Evros regional unit after strong winds pushed the flames southward.
The fire reached the vicinity of Soufli and advanced toward the mountainous area near the village of Roussa, where firefighters have been battling to prevent it from spreading further.
Greek authorities have deployed 60 firefighters, four specialized forest firefighting teams, 13 fire engines and a firefighting helicopter to contain the blaze. Municipal machinery and water tankers have also been mobilized to support operations in the affected area.
On the Bulgarian side of the border, firefighting crews, supported by military Cougar helicopters, have continued efforts to bring the wildfire under control. Bulgarian authorities have also declared a partial state of emergency in the affected region as the fire continued to spread.
Emergency services from both countries are coordinating their response as difficult terrain and strong winds continue to hamper firefighting efforts.
Authorities said there have been no confirmed reports of casualties or evacuations so far, but crews remain on high alert as the wildfire continues to threaten forested areas near the border.
Officials urged residents to follow instructions from emergency services and avoid entering the affected areas until the fire is brought under control.(ILKHA)
